Basics are Sexy

I love my yoga teacher Jennifer Smith. LOVE HER. She's always a cheerleader, always watching out for our bodies, never pushes when she knows we aren't ready to be pushed, always pushes when she knows we need the extra encouragement.

Some people turn their nose up at Basics but Jennifer will make them rethink that really quick, the minute she says it's time for blanket work (i.e. try Warrior II with each foot on a blanket sometime, and you'll find your legs QUICKLY). Jennifer preaches, "Basics Are Sexy" and that's because they get a bad rap for being easy/boring/and well... Basic.

But in yoga, like in life, even the masters never stop learning, never stop growing. Jennifer said the pace of our progress can be like going through an entire phone book (remember those?) by turning 1 onion-skin page at a time. It's SLOW. It takes a LONG TIME, but, we WORK WHERE WE ARE in all of our yoga classes. And actually, in life too (is everything in yoga a metaphor for life? I'm starting to think so).

So... work where you are in life and in yoga. And don't shun the basics. Without the basics as our building blocks, we'll never master all the rest.
