"They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds."

This Lent and Easter season I’ve been thinking a lot about the journey we take from the darkness and cold of winter to the joy and renewal of spring. I’ve been pointing out all the tiny flower buds on the trees to my son and explaining to him that everything that died during winter’s frost is being reborn again.

I’ve asked him (and myself), would these first few days of spring feel quite so beautiful if we hadn't just gone through some dark and cold winter days? As we watch tiny flowers sprouting up in our yard, I ask him, if the seeds weren’t buried for months, would they have a chance to break through and bloom into something beautiful and new? It's just like life, I say to him. Sometimes we're happy and sometimes we're sad, but we need to try to appreciate all of these times, and know that in every moment, even the sad ones, we're learning and growing.

In the midst of winter, it's sometimes very hard to remember that spring is coming. But we have to go through the darkness and cold if we want to fully appreciate the sun. And just like the tiny seeds, buried for months in the dark, we can be reborn too.

Namaste.
